New materials through modifications of the surface finish on glass

What was the challenge or problem to solve?

Using laser technology it is possible to modify the surface of various materials, such as glass, metals, plastics … and provide them with unique properties.

Through laser texturing, it is possible to modify the surface tension of these materials, and achieve super-hydrophobic / hydrophilic surfaces.

The client wanted to prospect the potential of this technology on glass, with the aim of facilitating its cleaning, as well as providing it with antibacterial properties, to achieve a cleaner and more hygienic product.

How was it addressed or what was the solution?

The Materials Innovation team carried out this project through the prior study of different types of structures from a theoretical point of view, from which the final properties could be predicted.

Subsequently, the laser marking parameters were optimized to achieve the type of texturing with good resolution and reproducibility.

Finally, the samples obtained were characterized to evaluate their easy cleaning properties by means of the contact angle equipment with a static / dynamic module. The antibacterial properties were evaluated according to ISO 22196: 2011, in which the type bacteria were inoculated and the corresponding microbiological tests were carried out.

Challenge

  • Get an easy-to-clean and bacteria repellent surface
  • Texturing a glass surface

Solution

  • Selection of laser patterns to modify the super-hydrophobic / hydrophilic properties
  • Optimization of laser marking parameters
